Should I Retake the SAT? A 2026 Decision Guide

Should I retake the SAT? College Board sets no limit, most students score higher the second time, and November 7 or December 5 may still fit.

Should I Retake the SAT? A 2026 Decision Guide

Yes, for most students who still have a test date that fits their applications. College Board sets no limit on how many times you can take the SAT, and it says most students score higher the second time. The useful question is which date you can still reach, and whether a higher section score would change a college or a scholarship on your list.

This page is the decision. It covers the retake rule, what College Board says about a second sitting, the November 7 and December 5 deadlines, how superscoring and Score Choice actually work, and when keeping the score you have is the better use of the month. What a given total means for admissions lives on the score pages linked below, not here.

College Board Does Not Limit SAT Retakes

College Board's help center answers the question in one line: you can retake the SAT as many times as you want. There is no lifetime cap and no penalty printed on the score for sitting again. Each registration is a new test date, with its own fee, and each date produces its own Reading and Writing score and Math score.

A retake is not a rewrite of the old score. Both dates stay on your College Board record. What a college sees depends on that college's policy and on which dates you choose to send. Some colleges want every score. Some will take the highest total from a single date. Some superscore, which means they combine your highest Reading and Writing with your highest Math across dates. You cannot send a single section by itself.

College Board also tells families that most students score higher the second time. Most students take the SAT first in the spring of junior year, then again in the summer or fall of senior year. That describes what most students do. It is not a requirement of two sittings, and it is not a promise that your number will rise. A second test helps when you have something specific left to fix. It does little if you sit again with the same habits.

The Dates Still Open After October 17

Weekend SAT dates and deadlines below are from College Board's dates and deadlines page and its score release calendar, read on October 17, 2026. Check-in is at 7:45 a.m. local time, doors close at 8 a.m., and testing starts between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. Confirm the arrival time on the admission ticket. A late fee applies after the regular deadline. The dollar amount changes, so check College Board's fee table when you register rather than trusting a number from an older article.

Test date Regular registration Late registration Scores to students
November 7, 2026 October 23 October 27 November 20
December 5, 2026 November 20 November 24 December 18
March 6, 2027 February 19 February 23 March 19

November 7 is a short runway. Regular registration closes October 23, and the late window closes October 27. Scores arrive November 20, which is after November 1 early action and early decision deadlines. A November score can still matter for colleges that accept November testing, for early action plans with later score deadlines, and for regular decision. If your list needs a score in hand before November 1, November is already too late and December is too late as well. Read each college's own testing page before you pay.

December 5 scores arrive December 18. That is in time for many regular decision deadlines in January and for updated scores after an early application, if the college accepts them. March 6 is the first date with a long study window, and its scores arrive March 19, which is after most regular decision deadlines. March is the right date when you are a junior, or a senior whose colleges will take a spring score for waitlists, scholarships, or a later round. Our SAT test dates page keeps the full calendar, and when SAT scores come out explains the release itself.

Superscoring and Score Choice

Superscoring is a college practice, not a button on the SAT. The college takes your highest Reading and Writing and your highest Math from different dates and adds them. You do not build that total yourself and you cannot send one section from a date. If a college superscores, a retake that lifts only your weaker section still helps. Our SAT superscoring guide walks through how to check a college's policy.

Score Choice lets you pick which test dates to send. You choose by date, not by section. It is not available for the four free score sends you select when you register for a weekend SAT, or for the free sends that come with in-school testing. Later paid sends can use it, including a later send of an in-school score. The four free weekend sends can be changed until nine days after the test. On November 7, December 5, and March 6, scores come out 13 days after the test, so that free window closes before you see the number. That is not every weekend date. June 5, 2027 scores come out June 21, and the nine-day window still closes first. Do not plan on looking at the score and then editing the free sends. Later sends, including Score Choice, are a separate order. How to send SAT scores and whether to submit them cover the college side, including test-optional lists.

When a Retake Is Worth It

Register again if at least one of these is true:

  • One section is clearly behind the other, and your colleges superscore. A month aimed at the weaker section is the cheapest way to move the total they will use.
  • Your latest total sits just under a line you can name: a college's middle 50 percent, or a scholarship cutoff you have read on that college's site. Guessing the line is not a reason. Open the page and write the number down.
  • You had a bad day you can describe: illness, a timing collapse in one module, a whole domain you had not studied. A retake without a change in preparation repeats the day.
  • You are a junior. Fall of senior year is the sitting College Board itself points to, and March or later still leaves a senior-year date if you need it.

The section that moves a score is usually the one with more misses, not the one you like more. Reading and Writing is four domains: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. Math is its own set of domains. A full-length practice test in Bluebook shows which domain still costs you points. Then drill that domain, not a random mix. If you are aiming at a round number, the plans for a 1200, a 1300, a 1400, and a 1500 start from the section split rather than from a vague "study more." What those totals mean for colleges is on is 1200 a good SAT score, is 1300 a good SAT score, and is 1400 a good SAT score.

When to Keep the Score You Have

Skip the retake if every college on your list is test optional and your score is below the range they publish for enrolled students. Sending a weak score into a test-optional review rarely helps, and the weeks are better spent on the rest of the application. Also skip it if you cannot name a date whose scores arrive before the deadline that matters, or if you would be studying for a test in the same weeks your early applications are due and those applications cannot use the new score.

A small gap is not automatically worth another Saturday. If you are already inside the middle of the range at the colleges you will actually apply to, another 20 points is unlikely to change the decision. It can still matter for a scholarship with a published cutoff. Read the aid page. Do not assume the cutoff from a forum post.

If you took the PSAT/NMSQT this month and you are waiting on that score before you decide, use what to do after PSAT scores. Students whose schools submit answers after October 9 do not see scores until November 5 at the earliest, which is after both the November 7 regular deadline and the late deadline. Their next SAT is December 5.

How to Use a Short Window

For November 7 you have days, not a semester. Take one timed Reading and Writing module and one timed Math module, mark every miss by domain, and spend the remaining days only on the two domains with the most misses. Do not start a new content area the week of the test.

For December 5 you have about six weeks from October 19. That is enough to repair one weak domain and to sit one full Bluebook practice test two weeks out. Our November SAT study plan and December SAT study plan are the week-by-week versions. The study times in those plans are our estimates. College Board does not publish a points-per-week figure.

Registration itself is covered in how to register for the SAT. After you test, the score report is explained in how to read an SAT score report, and the national picture is in SAT percentiles. The class of 2026 averaged 1045 overall, from College Board's report on that class. Your retake decision should be about your list, not about that average.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retaking the SAT

Can I retake the SAT as many times as I want?

Yes. College Board says you can retake the SAT as many times as you want. Each date is a separate registration, and each date stays on your record.

Do most students improve on a second SAT?

College Board says most students score higher the second time. Most students test first in the spring of junior year and again in the summer or fall of senior year. It does not guarantee a gain for every student, and it does not require two sittings. A retake works best when you change how you prepare.

Can I send only my highest section?

No. You send by test date, not by section. Colleges that superscore do the combining on their side, using your highest Reading and Writing and your highest Math across the dates they receive.

Can I use Score Choice on the four free score sends?

No. Score Choice does not apply to the four free weekend sends you pick at registration, or to the free sends that come with in-school testing. The weekend sends can only be changed until nine days after the test. For November 7, December 5, and March 6, scores arrive 13 days later, so you will not have seen them yet. June 5, 2027 arrives June 21, and the free window still closes first. Score Choice is for later orders of tests that already have scores.

Is November 7 or December 5 the better retake?

November 7 if you can register by October 27 and a college on your list will accept a score released November 20. December 5 if you need the extra weeks or you miss the November late deadline. Register for December by November 20. March 6 is the date for a longer rebuild, with scores on March 19.
