SAT Score Report Explained: Every Section (2026)

What every number and bar on the digital SAT score report means, what the online report adds to the PDF, what colleges receive, and what you can still do after you read it.

Your SAT score report is more than one number. The official PDF, which College Board calls Your Scores, shows your total score, your two section scores, a score range, a percentile, the average score of recent testers, and a Knowledge and Skills breakdown across eight content domains. The online version in your College Board account adds benchmarks, more percentile comparisons, and links to targeted practice. If you took the October 3 SAT, your scores arrive on October 16, and this guide walks through the report the way it is laid out, section by section.

For release timing, see when SAT scores come out. For sending scores to colleges step by step, see how to send SAT scores. This page is about reading the report itself.

Where to Find Your SAT Score Report

If you took the SAT on a weekend, your report lives in your College Board student account. College Board's instructions for weekend testers say students aged 13 or older sign in at studentscores.collegeboard.org to see their scores online and download the score report PDF.

  1. Sign in at studentscores.collegeboard.org. Your most recent score appears at the top of the page.
  2. Click See Score Details to open the additional insights: benchmarks, percentile ranks, and your Knowledge and Skills results.
  3. Click See Additional Scores to view earlier SAT and PSAT scores. The score report PDF is in the same account.

Can't find your scores? College Board suggests its Find Your Scores tool, and checking whether a parent or counselor created a second account for you. If you took the SAT during the school day, your school receives a PDF report for you, and US students aged 13 or older who gave a mobile number during testing can also see their scores in the BigFuture School app.

Total and Section Scores

Reading and Writing and Math are each scored 200 to 800, and the total (400 to 1600) is their sum. The PDF prints the possible range next to each score. Our guide to how the SAT is scored explains how the adaptive test turns answers into these numbers.

Score Range

Under each score you will see a score range. College Board says score ranges are derived from the standard error of measurement and show how much your scores would likely vary if you took a different administration of the test under identical conditions. In plain terms, a 1380 is best read as "about 1380." A gap of a few points between two scores may not reflect any difference in skill, which is worth remembering before you retake for a 10-point gain.

Average Score

The report also shows the average total and section score of all testers over the last three years. For a sense of scale, College Board's class of 2026 annual report puts the mean for that graduating class at 1045 (528 Reading and Writing, 517 Math) across 1,954,833 test takers.

What the Percentile on Your SAT Score Report Means

Illustrated crowd of small students in knit hats standing along a hilly curve, with one student waving an orange flag on top of the right-hand peak and a cat asleep below

The percentile is the most misread line on the report, because there are now three kinds you may run into.

  • The All Tester Percentile (on your PDF). College Board's sample report explains that the percentiles compare a student's scores with "all SAT test takers from the last three years," including all SAT Weekend and SAT School Day administrations. The same guide defines that group as the past three 12th-grade cohorts of SAT takers, worldwide. A 75th percentile means you scored as well as or better than 75% of that group.
  • Country, state and all-tester ranks (online only). In the online report you can also see where you rank among testers in your country and your state over the same three years, plus your score compared with the average at your school and district.
  • Nationally representative and SAT User percentiles (College Board research tables). These are the two columns most guides quote, including our SAT percentiles chart. In College Board's Understanding Scores tables, the national percentile comes from a research study weighted to represent all US 11th and 12th graders, and the user percentile is based on SAT takers who graduated in the past three school years. A 1400, for example, is the 97th national and 93rd user percentile.

Because each group is defined differently, the percentile on your report will not always match the research table exactly. For college planning, compare your score with each college's own middle 50% range instead.

Knowledge and Skills: The Most Useful Part of the Report

The Knowledge and Skills section shows your performance in each of the eight content domains the SAT measures, four in each section:

Reading and Writing Domains Math Domains (questions per test)
Information and IdeasAlgebra (13-15)
Craft and StructureAdvanced Math (13-15)
Expression of IdeasProblem-Solving and Data Analysis (5-7)
Standard English ConventionsGeometry and Trigonometry (5-7)

For each domain the report shows three things:

  • How big the domain is. The approximate number of questions and the share of the section they make up. College Board's own example: 12 to 14 questions would be about 26% of the Reading and Writing section.
  • A progress bar. The filled part represents your level of mastery in that domain, not your score.
  • A performance range under the bar, which is your score band for that domain.

Online, the insights go further: they place you in one of seven performance score bands per domain, and a link opens College Board's Skills Insight tool with the skills and sample questions students in the next band can typically handle.

Start with the domain that is both large and low. Algebra and Advanced Math carry 13 to 15 Math questions each, so a weak bar there costs more than one in Geometry and Trigonometry. A low Standard English Conventions bar is rule-based grammar, which our SAT grammar practice targets directly.

College and Career Readiness Benchmarks

The SAT's benchmarks are 480 in Reading and Writing and 530 in Math. College Board says they predict a 75% likelihood of earning a C or higher in a related first-semester, credit-bearing college course. They are set per section, so you can meet one and not the other. The online report tells you whether you met each benchmark and links to resources for the skills to work on. A benchmark is a readiness signal, not an admissions cutoff.

What Colleges See When You Send Scores

College Board says the score reports colleges receive contain your total and section scores. A few rules shape what lands on an admissions desk:

  • Additional score sends include your last six scores unless you choose otherwise.
  • Score Choice lets you pick which test dates to send, by whole test date, but some colleges and scholarship programs require all your scores. Score Choice does not apply to the free score sends you pick when you register for a weekend test.
  • Four free score reports come with each registration if you order them by 9 days after the test date. For the November 7 SAT that is November 16, four days before scores come out on November 20.
  • After that, College Board's fee table lists $15 per report, $31 for rush reporting (plus the report fee), and $35 for archived scores. Rush reports go out in 1 to 4 business days and only for scores already released.
  • College Board also sends your scores to your state scholarship organization, if there is one, and to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program if you tested in the U.S. or a U.S. territory or are a U.S. citizen testing abroad, unless you opt out by contacting Customer Service.

If you sit the test more than once, many colleges combine your best sections; see how SAT superscoring works.

If Your Report Says Score Sends Held

If Score Sends Held appears at the top of the report, College Board was unable to confirm that a complete set of responses was available when the test was scored. In that case it will not report the scores to colleges, universities or scholarship programs unless you ask it to. Contact Customer Service before you assume a college has your score.

If a Score Looks Wrong: Verification and Cancellation

  • Score verification costs $55 (a fee waiver is available). You order it by calling Customer Service at 866-630-9305 (US and Canada). It is performed only once per test, and the deadline is 5 months after test day, so for the October 3 SAT that is early March 2027.
  • No question-by-question report. College Board says the Question-and-Answer Service and the Student Answer Service are not available for the digital SAT, so you cannot buy back your test questions.
  • Canceling scores has to happen before you see them. For a weekend test, the deadline is 11:59 p.m. ET one week after test day, and canceled scores cannot be reinstated. Since scores come out about 13 days after the test, the window closes before your report exists.

If your score is lower than your Bluebook practice tests, look first at the Knowledge and Skills bars to see which domain slipped.

What to Do After You Read Your Report

  1. Note your two weakest domains. They are your retake study plan.
  2. Compare your total with each college's middle 50% range. Near 1380? See whether 1380 is a good SAT score.
  3. Decide on a retake by the registration deadline. The remaining 2026 dates are November 7 (register by October 23) and December 5 (register by November 20).
  4. Practice the weak domains in short daily sessions. Larry Learns has 25,000+ SAT and ACT practice questions on web, iPhone and Android, with 3 free quizzes a day; you can start a quiz now and track your score estimate as it moves.

Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT Score Report

Where can I see my SAT score report?

Sign in to your College Board account at studentscores.collegeboard.org (students 13 or older). Your latest score appears at the top, See Score Details opens the full insights, and you can download the official PDF score report from the same page.

What does the Knowledge and Skills section show?

It shows a progress bar for each of the eight content domains, four in Reading and Writing and four in Math. The filled part of the bar shows your level of mastery in that domain, not your score, and each domain lists roughly how many questions it has on the test.

Which percentile is on my SAT score report?

The PDF shows the All Tester Percentile, which compares you with all SAT test takers from the last three years. The online report adds country and state ranks. The nationally representative and user percentiles you see in guides come from College Board's research tables.

Do colleges see my Knowledge and Skills results?

College Board says the score reports colleges receive contain total and section scores. It describes the domain breakdown as a way for you to find the content domains you may want to focus on.

Can I get my SAT questions and answers back?

No. The Question-and-Answer Service and Student Answer Service are not available for the digital SAT. You can order score verification for $55 within 5 months of test day, once per test.
