National Merit Commended Scholar: What It Means in 2026

A "National Merit Commended Scholar" is a student whose junior-year PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index cleared the national Commended cutoff but fell short of their state's Semifinalist cutoff. The official title is Commended Student. For the class of 2027, who took the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2025, the cutoff is a Selection Index of 208, and high schools are handing out the Letters of Commendation right now, in late September 2026.

It's a real national honor that puts you in roughly the top 4 percent of more than 1.2 million entrants. It doesn't come with a check from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Below: what the recognition is, the math behind 208, what it's worth, and exactly how to write it on your college applications. What a National Merit Commended Student Is

Every year NMSC uses the PSAT/NMSQT as a first screen of everyone who enters its competition. In the 2027 program, over 1.2 million juniors took the October 2025 test, according to NMSC's September 2026 news release. From that pool, NMSC identifies about 50,000 high scorers. Roughly a third of them (more than 16,000) become Semifinalists, picked state by state. NMSC describes the rest, about 34,000 students, as Commended Students.

The two groups are chosen differently. Semifinalists are the top scorers within each state, so the cutoff varies by state. Commended Students are named on a single national cutoff that applies to everyone, no matter where they live. If your Selection Index is at or above the Commended cutoff but below your state's Semifinalist cutoff, you're Commended.

One more thing about the name. "Commended Scholar" is how most people search for it, but "Merit Scholar" is a title NMSC reserves for students who actually win a National Merit Scholarship. On anything official, use National Merit Commended Student.

The Class of 2027 Commended Cutoff: 208

NMSC publishes the national Commended cutoff in its annual Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program, which it sends to high schools and posts online in September. The September 2026 edition states that the national qualifying score for Commended Students in the 2027 program is 208. That number applies in every state.

The cutoff is a Selection Index, not a PSAT total score. NMSC calculates it by doubling your Reading and Writing section score, adding your Math section score, and dividing by 10. The scale runs from 48 to 228. Because Reading and Writing counts twice, the same 208 can come from quite different total scores:

So the lowest total that reaches 208 sits somewhere between 1320 and 1420 on the PSAT's 320–1520 scale, depending on how your points split between the sections. (Commended Students can score higher than that, up to just below their state's Semifinalist cutoff.) A student with a 1400 total can miss the cutoff while a student with a 1340 clears it. The cutoff moves from year to year. NMSC says only that it is a "nationally applied Selection Index qualifying score that may vary from year to year," and it announces each year's figure the September after the test. When and How Commended Students Find Out

The news comes through your school, not your inbox. NMSC's key-dates schedule shows Letters of Commendation were mailed to high school principals on September 10, 2026, and its competition steps describe Commended Students being notified through their high schools in late September. Schools present the letters to students, so the timing on your end depends on your counselor's office.

You don't have to wait to know where you stand. Your PSAT/NMSQT score report from last fall already shows your Selection Index. If it's 208 or higher and you weren't named a Semifinalist, you're Commended. Two things to check:

• An asterisk next to your Selection Index means the score isn't considered for the program, usually because NMSC recorded you as not meeting its entry requirements (it can also mean the score was reported for guidance only). If that's an error, your school or you should contact NMSC right away.
• Semifinalist status overrides Commended. If your index also cleared your state's Semifinalist cutoff, you got the Semifinalist notice instead, with an application to complete.

If it's October and you've heard nothing despite a qualifying index, ask your counselor.

What Commended Status Is Worth

Here's the honest version. Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, and NMSC gives them no scholarship money for the Commended title itself. What it can lead to:

Corporate Special Scholarships

Some Commended Students become candidates for Special Scholarships paid for by corporate sponsors. NMSC's Guide says about 620 of them are awarded each year to high performers who aren't Finalists but meet a sponsor's criteria, which usually means being the child of an employee or living in a community where the company operates. Awards are either a one-time payment of $2,500 to $10,000 or a renewable $1,000 to $10,000 per year, set by the sponsor.

The catch is timing. According to NMSC's fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT Student Guide, a sponsor's Entry Form must be filed in the same academic year as the qualifying test, and it's made available through the sponsoring company. For the class of 2027 that was junior year. For this cycle, NMSC planned to send Special Scholarship applications to candidates through their high schools in late November 2026 and to start notifying winners in March 2027. If a parent's employer sponsors National Merit awards and you didn't file an Entry Form, ask the employer's HR office whether anything is still possible, but don't count on it.

College admissions

Commended status is a nationally benchmarked academic honor, and it belongs in the honors section of your application. It won't carry an application on its own, but it's a clean, verifiable signal that you tested near the top of a national pool.

College scholarships

Be careful here. The college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships run through NMSC are offered only to Finalists, according to NMSC's Guide. If a college gives money for Commended status, that would be the college's own merit program, and its financial aid page will spell out which level qualifies. Check each school on your list rather than assuming.

How to List Commended Student on Your College Applications

The Common App's honors section lets you list up to five academic honors. For each one you give the title, when you received it, and the level of recognition, according to Common App's application checklist. Here's how to fill it in:

If you're applying Early Decision or Early Action with a November 1 deadline, the letter arrives in plenty of time to list it. If you've already submitted, check whether the college accepts updates through its applicant portal before sending anything; a single honor usually isn't worth a separate email to an admissions office.

If You're a Junior Taking the PSAT/NMSQT This October

The class of 2028 enters the program on the PSAT/NMSQT given October 1 through 30, 2026. NMSC's Guide says students spending the usual four years in high school must take it in their third year, usually 11th grade, to enter. A 10th-grade score doesn't count toward National Merit.

• Weight your prep toward Reading and Writing. A 10-point gain in Reading and Writing adds 2 Selection Index points; the same gain in Math adds 1.
• Know when scores land. College Board releases fall 2026 in-school scores on October 22, November 5, or November 12, depending on when your school submits answers. Our guide to when PSAT scores come out explains the waves.
• Watch the five-day window. If something went wrong on test day and you don't want your Selection Index used for the program, NMSC's Student Guide says you must contact NMSC within five days of the test.
• Check Special Scholarship eligibility now. If a parent's employer is an NMSC sponsor, junior year is when the Entry Form has to be filed.

Is a National Merit Commended Scholar the same as a Commended Student?

Yes. "Commended Scholar" is the common search term, but NMSC's official title is Commended Student. NMSC uses "Merit Scholar" only for students who win a National Merit Scholarship, so use "National Merit Commended Student" on applications.

What PSAT score do you need to be a Commended Student?
