How to Study for the PSAT (SAT Suite Skills, School-Day Date)

How to study for the PSAT is the same skill list as the Digital SAT, in a school-day administration your counselor schedules. The PSAT/NMSQT is the SAT Suite test that also feeds National Merit for 11th graders. It is not a different math. It is not a different grammar. The live SAT items you can play today are the study. Ask your school for the exact fall date. For fall 2026, College Board's dates page lists the in-school window as October 1 to 30, 2026 for SAT School Day, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 8/9. Source: SAT Suite dates and deadlines.

What is on the test, section by section, is already written: what is on the PSAT. Math items you can drill now: PSAT math practice. This page is the plan, not a second overview.

Study the SAT Suite Skills, Not a Mystery PSAT

Reading and Writing uses the same four domains as the SAT: Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas, and Standard English Conventions. Passages are still short. Math uses Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry. Trigonometry is on the PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10. It is not on PSAT 8/9. That is the only domain drop you need to remember if you are in eighth or ninth grade.

Clay timeline of a PSAT study plan on a school calendar

So the study is not a new book. It is SAT algebra, grammar, and words in context in five-question passes. The bank is 25,000+ questions on iPhone, Android, and the web with the same account. Free accounts get three quizzes a day, five questions by default. Ace at $19/month removes both daily caps. Full-length official tests still belong in Bluebook when you need a long sit. Digital PSAT/NMSQT is the same length as the SAT: 2 hours and 14 minutes, 54 Reading and Writing questions, 44 Math questions. Source: How the PSAT/NMSQT is structured. The score scale tops out at 1520, and the SAT ceiling is harder. A Bluebook SAT is still the best dress rehearsal for the interface.

A Six-Week Shape If Your School Tests in October

Many schools put PSAT/NMSQT in October. Yours might not. If the date is in six weeks, this is the shape. If the date is in two, skip to the last two weeks and stop adding new skills.

WeekDaily doseOnce that week
1-2Three SAT quizzes a day, mixedOne Bluebook module so the app is not a surprise
3-4Same dose, but name the miss (algebra, grammar, vocab)One punctuation or transitions spoke
5Keep the dose. Add one math formula passSleep. No new book
6 (test week)Two quizzes a day, then stop the night beforeSchool-day bag: whatever your school listed

The next SAT dates after this update are October 3, 2026, November 7, 2026, and December 5, 2026. Those dates are SAT, not PSAT. Use them if you will take the SAT later this fall. Do not treat them as your school's PSAT day.

National Merit Is an 11th-Grade Track, Not a Study Trick

Only the 11th-grade PSAT/NMSQT feeds National Merit. A 10th-grade score does not. Cutoffs are state Selection Index numbers that move. We do not print a stale cutoff here. The live explainer is NMSQT qualifying scores and PSAT National Merit scholarship. If you are a sophomore, study for the skill, not for a scholarship that cannot see this year's score.

Whether the PSAT "matters" for college files is a different question: does the PSAT matter. Colleges do not receive PSAT scores as an SAT substitute. The study still pays, because the SAT in March or May is the same suite.

What a PSAT Week Looks Like on a Phone

The PSAT will not send a college a score they can use as an SAT. It will send you a leak list if you take the test date seriously. After the score report, map each miss to a spoke: algebra, advanced math, grammar, words in context. Then run three quizzes a day on that spoke for two weeks. That is the only use of the report that compounds. A 10th grader does the same mapping without watching National Merit cutoffs. An 11th grader can read NMSQT qualifying scores after the test, not before. The next SAT dates after this update are October 3, 2026, November 7, 2026, and December 5, 2026. Those SAT dates are the college test that follows. The bank is 25,000+ questions on iPhone, Android, and the web with the same account. Free accounts get three quizzes a day, five questions by default. Ace at $19/month removes both daily caps. Do not buy a PSAT-branded book if you already have SAT Suite practice. The interface you need is Bluebook plus five questions tonight.

Frequently Asked Questions About How to Study for the PSAT

When is the PSAT in 2026?

Your school picks a day inside College Board's fall in-school window of October 1 to 30, 2026. Ask the counselor for the exact day. There is no national Saturday PSAT date.

Is PSAT study different from SAT study?

The skills are the same SAT Suite domains. Digital PSAT/NMSQT is the same 2 hours and 14 minutes and 98 questions as the SAT. The score scale tops out at 1520, and for 11th graders it is also a National Merit entry. Study the skills. Take the SAT later for the college score.

How long should I study for the PSAT?

Six weeks of a daily five-question dose is enough for most sophomores. Two weeks is a grammar-and-algebra sprint, not a new personality.

Do 10th graders need National Merit cutoffs?

No. National Merit reads the 11th-grade PSAT/NMSQT. Sophomores should still take the test if the school offers it, for practice.

What should I do the night before?

Stop new practice. Charge the allowed device if the school uses one. Pack what the school listed. Sleep.

Tonight: start a free practice set. Tomorrow: ask the counselor for the date. create a free account if you want the streak to survive until then.
