What Does PSAT Stand For? PSAT/NMSQT Meaning (2026)
What does PSAT stand for? Preliminary SAT. PSAT/NMSQT means Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Here is what each part means.

The full name, what each letter means, and which of the three PSAT tests can enter you in National Merit.
PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT, and the fall junior-year version, the PSAT/NMSQT, stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. That is the exact wording College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) both use. The first half tells you the test is a warm-up for the SAT. The second half tells you it is also the entry test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which is why the same exam carries two names joined by a slash.
There is a twist: the letters "SAT" inside "PSAT" no longer stand for anything themselves. Below is what every part of the name means, how the three tests in the PSAT family differ, and why only one of them counts for National Merit.

College Board's own National Merit page spells it out the same way: the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, a competition conducted by NMSC. PSAT/NMSQT is a registered trademark of College Board and NMSC together, which is why you often see it printed with the 庐 symbol.
Plain "PSAT," without anything after it, is how most students and teachers refer to the whole family of tests. College Board lists PSAT itself as one of its trademarks, alongside Bluebook, the testing app the digital PSAT runs in.
Does the SAT Itself Stand for Anything?
No. The "SAT" in "Preliminary SAT" is a brand name, not an abbreviation. Back in 1996, Education Week reported College Board's position in one line: "SAT is not an initialism; it does not stand for anything." College Board asked that it not be printed with periods, as "S.A.T.," for the same reason.
So the only letter in PSAT that truly expands is the P. If you want the story of the older names the SAT carried before it became just three letters, read our guide to what SAT stands for.

The Three Tests in the PSAT Family
College Board gives three tests with "PSAT" in the name. They share the same two sections and the same length, but they are aimed at different grades, report on different score ranges, and only one connects to National Merit:
Test
Grades
Score Range
National Merit Entry?
PSAT/NMSQT
10 and 11 (generally taken in 11th)
320 to 1520
Yes, in the right year
PSAT 10
Typically 10 and 11, given in spring
320 to 1520
No
PSAT 8/9
8 or 9
240 to 1440
No
All three take 2 hours and 14 minutes in the Bluebook app: a 64-minute Reading and Writing section with 54 questions and a 70-minute Math section with 44 questions, per College Board's structure pages. For a module-by-module breakdown, see how many questions are on the PSAT.
PSAT/NMSQT
This is the one most people mean by "the PSAT." College Board describes it as both a pretest for the SAT and the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program, generally taken in 11th grade. NMSC says students enter the program by taking it in October. Our overview of what the PSAT is covers registration, cost and timing in more detail.
PSAT 10
The PSAT 10 is the spring version, built on the same scale as the PSAT/NMSQT. It is a useful checkpoint for sophomores, but NMSC states plainly that the PSAT 10 will not be considered for National Merit entry. See our full guide to the PSAT 10.
PSAT 8/9
College Board calls the PSAT 8/9 the first test in the SAT Suite, designed for 8th or 9th graders. Its lower ceiling of 1440 reflects the grade level, and like the PSAT 10 it does not count for National Merit. Read more in our PSAT 8/9 guide.
What "NMSQT" Means in Practice
The "National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test" half of the name is not decoration. It has real consequences for juniors:
It is the only door in. NMSC uses the test as an initial screen of everyone who enters. Its September 2026 Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program says approximately 1.2 million high school students enter the program each year by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. There is no separate application to enter; you enter by testing and meeting the entry requirements
Timing matters. According to NMSC's entry requirements, the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the 2028 program, and you must take it in the specified year of your high school program, no later than your third year in grades 9 through 12
Answer the entry questions carefully. During the student readiness check, you are asked whether you are enrolled in high school, when you will finish, and how many years you will spend in grades 9 to 12. The NMSC section of your score report shows those answers and whether your Selection Index will be considered
Mistakes can be fixed. If the report says you do not meet the requirements because of a wrong answer, NMSC lets you update it online; requests for the 2028 program must arrive by October 15, 2027
The stakes are concrete. NMSC expects about 3.5 million students to take the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT, approximately 1.2 million of whom will meet the entry requirements, and it offers about 7,320 scholarships each year
If you plan to spend the usual four years in high school, NMSC's rules say you must take the qualifying test in your third year (grade 11), so a sophomore PSAT/NMSQT score is useful practice but does not enter you in the program. How the PSAT Connects to the SAT
The "Preliminary" in the name is literal. College Board builds every test in the SAT Suite on one common score scale, so a score means the same level of achievement on each: a student who earns a 500 Math section score on the PSAT 10 would be expected to earn a 500 on the SAT that same day. The PSAT/NMSQT tops out at 1520 rather than 1600 because, in College Board's score guide for educators, each test's range reflects "grade-level appropriateness" within one common scale, but the two sections, the question types, the Desmos calculator and the adaptive modules all carry over. Our side-by-side of the PSAT vs SAT lists every difference.
That shared design is the practical meaning of "Preliminary SAT": anything you practice for one helps on the other. The fastest gains come from short, frequent sessions on the skills that cost you points, rather than another full-length test every weekend.
Frequently Asked Questions About What PSAT Stands For
What does PSAT stand for?
PSAT stands for Preliminary SAT. The fall version, the PSAT/NMSQT, stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
What does NMSQT stand for?
NMSQT stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It signals that the PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, run by National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Is the PSAT the same as the PSAT/NMSQT?
Usually, yes. When people say "the PSAT" they almost always mean the PSAT/NMSQT. Strictly speaking, though, "PSAT" also covers the PSAT 10 and the PSAT 8/9, which do not enter you in National Merit.
Does the PSAT 10 count for National Merit?
No. NMSC states that the PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 will not be considered for entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only the PSAT/NMSQT, taken in the specified year, counts.
Who makes the PSAT?
College Board gives all three PSAT tests in its Bluebook testing app. The PSAT/NMSQT itself is cosponsored by College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, its name is a registered trademark of both, and NMSC conducts the scholarship competition that uses the scores.
Does the S in PSAT stand for scholastic?
No. The SAT is not an acronym today, so the "SAT" in PSAT does not expand to any words. Only the P (Preliminary) has an official meaning.
