National Merit Semifinalist 2027: What to Do Next

If you were named a National Merit Semifinalist for 2027, the date that matters most right now is October 7, 2026: that's when your completed National Merit Scholarship Application is due to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). NMSC announced more than 16,000 Semifinalists in its September 9, 2026 news release, and about 95 percent of them are expected to become Finalists. Getting there is mostly a matter of finishing every requirement on time.

This guide walks through what you have to do between now and February: the application, the confirming SAT or ACT score, the deadlines that get students withdrawn, and the scholarships Finalists compete for. What Being a National Merit Semifinalist Means

Over 1.2 million juniors entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2025. NMSC named the highest scorers in each state as Semifinalists, a group that represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. Each state's share of Semifinalists is proportional to its share of the nation's graduating seniors, which is why the qualifying Selection Index differs from state to state. Semifinalist is the only level that can advance. Commended Students stop there; Semifinalists can become Finalists, and every National Merit Scholarship winner is chosen from the Finalist pool. You can advance and compete in only one program year, so this is your one shot.

Your school got the news first. NMSC's Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program shows application instructions going to principals on August 18, 2026, and the full Semifinalist list going to principals and colleges on September 8.

The 2027 Semifinalist Timeline

Every date below comes from NMSC's September 2026 Guide and its Requirements and Instructions for Semifinalists.

The Finalist Application: What You Submit and What Your School Submits

Everything runs through NMSC's Online Scholarship Application (OSA). You and a school official each complete separate sections, and the school transmits the finished application to NMSC by October 7. Your school may set an earlier internal deadline for your part, so ask your counselor this week.

Your part:

An essay written solely by you, responding to the prompt in the OSA.
Activities and volunteer service, leadership positions, honors or awards, and employment.
Biographical information, including your first-choice college, intended major, and career plans. NMSC uses this to match you with corporate-sponsored and college-sponsored awards, so keep it current.

Your school's part:

An endorsement from the principal (or a designated official) recommending you for a National Merit Scholarship. The school can revoke it at any point in the competition.
Your academic record: courses and grades for grades 9 through 11, plus the courses you're taking in grade 12.
A school recommendation and information about the school's curriculum and grading.

Don't treat the essay as a formality. NMSC's Guide notes that because every Finalist has an excellent record and outstanding scores, the school official's recommendation and the student's essay are often very influential in choosing winners. A short, specific essay about something you actually care about beats a polished list of accomplishments.

The Confirming SAT or ACT Score

To become a Finalist you must take the SAT or ACT and "earn scores that confirm your 2025 PSAT/NMSQT performance," in the words of NMSC's Requirements and Instructions. Here's how that works:

NMSC converts your score to a Selection Index. For the SAT it uses your Reading and Writing and Math section scores. For the ACT it uses concordance tables to put your ACT scores on the SAT scale first. A worksheet called the National Merit Scholarship Program SAT and ACT Conversion Tables is in the Competition Instructions section of the OSA.
No superscoring. NMSC considers only the highest set of scores from a single SAT or ACT administration. If you're used to colleges superscoring your SAT, this is different.
Eligible dates: SAT or ACT administrations from August 2024 through December 2026. A score from earlier than August 2024 won't count.
It has to be official. College Board and ACT don't send scores to NMSC unless you ask, and a screenshot or printout isn't accepted. Use NMSC's score-reporting codes: 0085 for the SAT and 7984 for the ACT.

NMSC doesn't publish the exact confirming score on its public web pages; it's in the materials inside the OSA. We haven't seen this year's figure, so we won't guess at one. Even if your SAT or ACT felt strong relative to your PSAT, check the worksheet rather than assuming. The scores are used only to decide whether you meet the Finalist requirement, not to pick scholarship winners.

Already tested? Log in to your College Board or ACT account and check whether NMSC is listed as a recipient. If it isn't, sending the report is entirely your responsibility, and NMSC says to do it immediately.

If you still need to take the SAT or ACT

NMSC urges Semifinalists to test no later than November for the SAT and October for the ACT, rather than waiting for December. NMSC also accepts scores from SAT School Day taken October 1 through 30, 2026, so ask your school's test coordinator whether that's an option. The remaining national dates:

The December dates technically work, but they leave little slack before NMSC's December 31 target for full award consideration. NMSC's schedule says only Semifinalists whose SAT or ACT scores it has received by December 31 will be considered for the National Merit $2500 Scholarship, so a December test date can cost you that chance if the report arrives late. What National Merit Finalists Compete For

About half of the 15,000 Finalists win a National Merit Scholarship. NMSC expects to offer about 6,700 awards worth roughly $24 million in spring 2027, in three types. No student can receive more than one monetary award from NMSC.

The college-sponsored awards come with conditions worth knowing now. You must tell NMSC that the sponsor college is your first choice, apply for admission there, and not already hold another National Merit Scholarship offer. According to NMSC's Requirements and Instructions, Finalists who report a sponsor college as their first choice before March 1, 2027 are in the first group referred to that college, and NMSC begins emailing college-sponsored offers on May 3, 2027. Once an offer is posted to your OSA dashboard, NMSC won't process a change of college choice, and the award is canceled if you enroll somewhere else.

How Semifinalists Get Withdrawn

NMSC's rule is blunt: meet all requirements and deadlines, or you're withdrawn. The common ways it happens:

The application isn't complete by October 7. Both your sections and your school's must be done.
No official SAT or ACT report by January 31, 2027, or a score that doesn't confirm your PSAT performance.
Grades slip. Schools are asked to tell NMSC about any noticeable decline in academic performance during senior year.
The school withdraws its endorsement.
You stop meeting the basic requirements, such as being in your last year of high school and planning to enroll full-time in college in fall 2027.

Also keep your mailing address and email current in the OSA. The Finalist letter goes to your home address.
