SAT Grammar Rules Cheat Sheet (Digital SAT Conventions)
A SAT grammar rules cheat sheet for Standard English Conventions: splices, agreement, tense, modifiers. The lookup next to live practice.
Larry Learns Team
An SAT grammar rules cheat sheet is the Standard English Conventions list on one screen: boundaries (commas, periods, semicolons) and form, structure, and sense (agreement, tense, pronouns, modifiers). It is not a practice set. The practice set is SAT grammar practice. Punctuation as a typed skill is SAT punctuation practice. The long guide is Digital SAT grammar rules.
College Board's educator alignment table puts Standard English Conventions at about 26% of Reading and Writing. The specifications overview lists that as 11 to 15 scored questions. Source: Reading and Writing specifications. Passages are 25 to 150 words, one question each, on the Reading and Writing section page. Keep this page open on a second screen while you drill. There is no separate download pack.

Boundaries items ask where one sentence should end. If you can read two complete sentences, you need a period, a semicolon, or a comma plus a coordinating conjunction. A comma alone is a splice. That is the whole game.
If you see
Legal join
Illegal join
Two complete sentences
Period. Semicolon. Comma + and/but/or
Comma only (splice). Nothing (run-on)
Sentence + extra phrase
Comma if the phrase is extra
Semicolon into a fragment
List of three or more
Commas between items
Semicolon between simple items
Which vs that

A comma before that
Drill this row first. Most punctuation misses on the Digital SAT are splices, not exotic dashes. The punctuation spoke is eight live items. This table is the rule you keep next to them.
SAT Grammar Rules Cheat Sheet: Form, Structure, and Sense
These items are not punctuation. The sentence is already joined. Something inside it does not match.
Rule
What to match
Classic trap
Subject-verb
The subject, not the nearest noun
The box of pencils are
Pronoun
The noun it replaces, in number and person
Each student brought their (on a test that wants his or her or a rewrite)
Tense
The time already in the passage
A sudden present in a past narrative
Modifier
The noun sitting next to the phrase
Walking to school, the backpack...
Parallel
The same form in a list
to run, swimming, and biked
Comparison
Compare people to people, scores to scores
unlike last year, students
Read the sentence without the extra phrase. If "The box ... are" still sounds wrong, you found the verb. Transitions are not this domain. Transitions sit in Expression of Ideas on SAT transitions practice.

How to Use the Cheat Sheet in a Five-Question Pass
Open start a free practice set. For each item, name the row before you tap: splice, agreement, tense, modifier, or parallel. If you cannot name the row, you are guessing. The bank is 25,000+ questions on iPhone, Android, and the web with the same account. Free accounts get three quizzes a day, five questions by default. Ace at $19/month removes both daily caps. The next SAT dates after this update are October 3, 2026, November 7, 2026, and December 5, 2026.
Words in Context is a skill inside Craft and Structure, not the whole domain. Craft and Structure is about 28% of Reading and Writing, or 13 to 15 questions, and also includes Text Structure and Purpose and Cross-Text Connections. Keep vocab items on Words in Context SAT practice. Do not turn this sheet into a vocab list.
Khan Academy Official SAT Prep still owns the lesson videos. Bluebook owns the full-length sit. This sheet is the list you glance at between five-question passes.
A Week With the Sheet Next to the Quiz
Keep this page open on a second screen while you work through the week. Monday: splice items only, using the boundaries table. Tuesday: subject-verb. Strip the prepositional phrase before you pick the verb. Wednesday: modifiers. The noun after the comma is the thing that was walking. Thursday: parallel lists. Friday: eight live items on SAT grammar practice. Saturday: punctuation spoke if commas were the miss. Sunday: off. The next SAT dates after this update are October 3, 2026, November 7, 2026, and December 5, 2026. The bank is 25,000+ questions on iPhone, Android, and the web with the same account. Free accounts get three quizzes a day, five questions by default. Ace at $19/month removes both daily caps. Do not add a 40-rule book. If you cannot name the row, you are not studying conventions. You are guessing. Khan is the lesson for a tense you never learned. It is not the week. Transitions are a different domain. Keep them on the transitions spoke so this sheet stays conventions-only. If you want the long explanation of a rule, open the complete guide, read one H2, and come back. Do not read the complete guide instead of a quiz. The sheet is a lookup. The quiz is the work. Name the row out loud once before you tap.
Frequently Asked Questions About the SAT Grammar Rules Cheat Sheet
Is there an official SAT grammar rules PDF?
College Board does not publish a one-page conventions PDF like the Math reference. This page is the list, kept open next to your practice. Do not pay for a pack of the same rows.
How many grammar questions are on the Digital SAT?
Standard English Conventions is about 26% of Reading and Writing, listed as 11 to 15 scored questions in College Board's specifications overview.
Should I memorize this sheet or do practice?
Do practice. Use the sheet to name the miss. A named miss is a five-question pass tomorrow. A memorized table with zero items is a poster.
Are dashes on the SAT?
They appear. Treat a dash pair like extra information. Do not hunt dashes until splices and agreement are clean.
Does this replace the complete grammar guide?
No. The guide is the long explanation. The cheat sheet is the lookup. The practice URL is the live set.
