SAT Transitions Practice (Digital SAT, With Answers)

SAT transitions practice is the Transitions skill inside Expression of Ideas on the Digital SAT. College Board's assessment framework puts that domain at about 20% of Reading and Writing, or 8 to 12 scored questions. You are not picking a comma. You are naming the logical relationship between two sentences, then choosing the word that marks it.

The live set below is the artifact. Cover the answers, finish the set, then read every explanation. These are the same items as a Larry Learns expression quiz: five questions, then a streak. Grammar and punctuation stay on SAT grammar practice and SAT punctuation practice.

SAT Transitions Practice Questions With Answers

Each item uses the Digital SAT prompt: "Which choice completes the text with the most logical transition?" Cover the answers first.

1. Contrast. The factory's third-quarter report was, on paper, a success: output rose 12 percent and two new lines opened. _______, an internal survey that same month posted the lowest satisfaction scores in a decade.

  • A) Therefore
  • B) Moreover
  • C) However
  • D) For instance

Answer: C. Output up, satisfaction down is a reversal. However marks it. Therefore would make the survey a result of the success. Moreover would add a second success. For instance would treat the survey as an example of the success.

2. Consequence. After four hearings, the council extended marsh protection to every parcel within a quarter mile of the water. _______, developers must now file an environmental review before breaking ground inside that boundary.

  • A) Meanwhile
  • B) Consequently
  • C) Granted
  • D) Likewise

Answer: B. The review rule follows from the new boundary. Consequently is cause to effect. Meanwhile is a side track. Granted concedes a point. Likewise claims a parallel case that is not there.

3. Particular example. Students who took at least one arts elective gained in reading fluency and in standardized scores. _______, those who joined the school band posted the largest math gains of any group.

  • A) In contrast
  • B) Therefore
  • C) In particular
  • D) Otherwise

Answer: C. Band is a specific case of the arts-elective claim. In particular narrows. In contrast would need a reversal. Therefore would make band a result, not an instance. Otherwise sets an alternative path.

4. Concession, then turn. The first season's counts were thin: storms canceled several surveys, and the sample covered only fourteen verges. _______, the team kept the protocol and expanded to forty sites the next year.

  • A) Therefore
  • B) For example
  • C) Nevertheless
  • D) Similarly

Answer: C. Thin data would normally stop a study. They continued anyway. Nevertheless is the turn. Therefore would treat expansion as the logical result of thin data. For example and Similarly do not mark a reversal.

5. Same direction. Cover crops raised water infiltration on the twelve farms in the study. _______, microbial diversity in the topsoil increased across the same fields.

  • A) However
  • B) Moreover
  • C) Instead
  • D) Conversely

Answer: B. A second benefit in the same direction is addition. Moreover fits. However, Instead, and Conversely all reverse.

6. Sequence. The crew mapped every crack in the dome and logged the mix used in each ring. _______ they poured a lighter pumice blend near the top to cut the load.

  • A) Previously
  • B) For instance
  • C) Then
  • D) In other words

Answer: C. Mapping first, pouring second is time order. Then is the sequence. Previously would rewind. For instance would treat the pour as an example of the mapping. In other words would restate, not continue.

7. False example. The new bike lane cut car traffic on Oak Avenue during rush hour. _______, the council expanded the program to three more streets within six months.

  • A) For example
  • B) Encouraged by this success,
  • C) However
  • D) Similarly

Answer: B. Expansion is a result of the first lane working, not an example of reduced traffic. "Encouraged by this success" carries both the cause and the judgment. For example is the common trap. However invents a reversal. Similarly claims a parallel that is not there.

8. Shift in subject. The early novels return to people cut off from everyone around them: a lighthouse keeper, a night translator, a widow who stops answering the door. _______, the books written after the move to the coast center on volunteer crews and the slow repair of a friendship.

  • A) Furthermore
  • B) Similarly
  • C) By contrast
  • D) Accordingly

Answer: C. Isolation versus community is a reversal of subject. By contrast marks it. Furthermore and Similarly would continue the isolation theme. Accordingly would make the later books a logical result of the early ones.

On Larry Learns, Expression of Ideas is the friendliest SAT subject at 72.3% accuracy across 650 answers (pulled 2026-08-27). Transitions still leak when the relationship is cause and the choice says "for example." Name the relationship first. Then look at the words.

Transition Families the Digital SAT Actually Tests

College Board's Reading and Writing section puts Transitions inside Expression of Ideas, next to Rhetorical Synthesis. The official assessment framework describes the skill as choosing the most logical transition word or phrase between ideas. All four choices are grammatical. The test is the logic, not the comma. That split is why this page is not a clone of grammar practice.

RelationshipWords that fitCommon trap
ContrastHowever, nevertheless, by contrastMoreover or therefore on a reversal
ConsequenceTherefore, consequently, as a resultFor example on a result
ExampleFor instance, in particularIn contrast on a narrower case
AdditionMoreover, furthermore, alsoHowever on a second point in the same direction
SequenceThen, next, subsequentlyIn other words on a later step

The mechanical test: cover the blank and say the relationship out loud. Contrast, cause, example, add, or sequence. If you cannot name it, do not pick a word yet. The same pause helps on Words in Context practice, where the passage also has a direction.

Hard SAT Transitions Practice

Hard items reuse easy words in the wrong job. "For example" is the most common miss: the second sentence is a result, a later step, or a contrast, and the choice offers an illustration. If the second sentence could not be swapped in as an instance of the first, it is not an example.

The other hard costume is two true statements that are not parallel. "Similarly" needs the same kind of fact twice. A cause and its effect are not similar. They are a chain.

Khan Academy and Worksheet Versions

Khan Academy's Official SAT Prep still drills Expression of Ideas. Use it for the lesson. Full-length Digital SAT tests live in Bluebook. A "transitions worksheet" or PDF of the eight items above is this page. Print it if you want paper.

How to Drill SAT Transitions Practice

Short sets. Eight to ten questions at a time. Log the relationship you missed, not the word. After thirty questions, most students are leaking on one row of the table. Stay on that row. Mix with reading strategies only after the leak closes.

Larry Learns is the daily layer: three free quizzes a day, an explanation on every question, SAT and ACT in one account. Ace is $19 a month if you want the caps off. The SAT prep schedule template shows how to slot a transitions set into a longer week. You can also open a mixed Reading and Writing session once the families are automatic.
