SAT School Day is the regular digital SAT, given at your own high school on a weekday instead of at a test center on a Saturday. Your school or district registers you and often covers the cost, and the score goes to colleges the same way a weekend score does. In 2026-27 schools can test on any school day from October 1 to 30, 2026 or March 1 to April 30, 2027 (College Board).
It is also how most students take the SAT now. In the class of 2025, 68% of SAT takers tested during the school day, and nearly 1.36 million students took the SAT through the School Day program (College Board newsroom). Here is how it works, when scores come out, and how it compares to the weekend SAT.
What Is SAT School Day?
SAT School Day is a way for schools, districts, and states to give the SAT to juniors and seniors in school, on a weekday. College Board describes it as "often free to students." You take it in Bluebook, the same testing app used on weekends, on a device your school provides or your own.
The test itself is the same digital SAT (SAT School Day structure):
- Reading and Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes (two 32-minute modules)
- Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes (two 35-minute modules)
- Total: 98 questions in 2 hours and 14 minutes, plus a 10-minute break between sections
Like the weekend test, each section adapts: your performance on the first module decides whether the second is harder or easier. It is scored on the same 400 to 1600 scale. If you want the details, see how digital SAT adaptive testing works.
One difference: some states include the SAT Essay in their School Day administrations. If yours does, your school will tell you, and it appears as a third section.
SAT School Day Dates for 2026-27
There is no single national School Day date. College Board sets a testing window, and each school or district picks its own day or days inside it.

How Much Does SAT School Day Cost?
For many students, nothing. School Day is often free to students, and College Board says the cost may be paid by a state, district, or school, or a combination of all three (District and School Pricing). Schools serving low-income students get a built-in discount, so individual students do not need to be identified for fee waivers after testing.
Who pays depends on where you live. Two examples from College Board's state partnership pages:
- Ohio: districts and schools can choose the SAT as the state-funded college admission test for juniors, with a spring 2027 testing window of March 1 to April 30 (Ohio partnership).
- Texas: the Texas Education Agency offers districts reimbursement for a college prep assessment such as the SAT, taken in the spring of junior year or any time in senior year, and College Board tells 11th and 12th graders in Texas public schools to ask their counselor about taking the SAT at no cost (Texas partnership).
In other states, whether School Day is offered, and whether it is free, is a district or school decision. The only reliable answer for your situation comes from your counselor.
SAT School Day Score Release Dates
Weekend SAT scores come out on a fixed date for each test (13 days later for every fall 2026 date). School Day scores work differently: they are released based on when your school submits the tests (Score Release Dates). For fall 2026:

So a student who tests in the first week of October could see scores by October 22, while one who tests at the end of the month waits until November 12. If your school tests as part of a state program, College Board says to check with the state, because its timing can differ. Spring 2027 School Day release dates were not yet listed on College Board's score release page when we checked in September 2026.

Sending SAT School Day Scores to Colleges
A School Day score is sent to colleges through the same College Board score send system as a weekend score. College Board calls School Day "a summative, college-reportable measure of readiness" (College Board K–12).
The free score sends work on a tighter clock, though. According to College Board's 2026 SAT School Day score sends code list:
- You can send your School Day scores free to up to four colleges, universities, or scholarship programs.
- You pick them during exam setup or within three days after testing. To add or change picks in that window, sign in to Bluebook with your sign-in ticket from the test, go to Your Tests, then Past, and click SAT Score Sends.
- After that, each additional report costs a fee ($15 per report on College Board's current fee table), unless you have a fee waiver.

Want to erase a School Day score? You have to ask testing staff to submit a cancellation request within five days of test day, and College Board notes that in some cases scores may still be shared with your school, district, or state (Canceling SAT School Day Scores).
Accommodations on SAT School Day
Students with a documented disability can test with accommodations such as extended time, extra and extended breaks, and text-to-speech. Accommodations must be approved by College Board's Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), and your school counselor or SSD coordinator can submit the request by the request deadline (Students with Disabilities).
Two practical notes for 2026-27:
- Some accommodations look different on a digital test. For example, you use zoom instead of large print, and a screen reader or text-to-speech instead of a human reader. Take a Bluebook practice test with your accommodations turned on so nothing surprises you.
- Starting fall 2026, students approved for text-to-speech or screen reader accommodations on in-school tests must bring their own wired, non-Bluetooth headphones, though students testing under a state contract follow their state's policy (College Board).
How to Find Out If Your School Offers SAT School Day
You cannot sign up for School Day on your own. College Board says students taking SAT School Day "do not need to register on their own," because schools or districts handle registration. So the steps are:
- Ask your counselor or principal whether your school gives SAT School Day this year, in the fall, the spring, or both, and for which grades.
- Ask for the exact date and whether it is free for you.
- Watch for the readiness check. Most schools hold one before test day, where you get a sign-in ticket, complete exam setup in Bluebook, and try a test preview (Bluebook).
- Prepare your device if you are bringing your own. Bluebook says it should hold a charge for 3 to 4 hours. Our SAT test day checklist covers the rest.

You do not have to pick one. A free School Day test makes a good first score, and you can add weekend dates later, since there is no limit on how many times you can take the SAT.
