Is 1380 a Good SAT Score? (2026)

Where a 1380 stands at selective public and private universities, why it sits exactly at the floor of some ranges, and what the 40 points to 1420 would buy you.

Yes, a 1380 is a very good SAT score. It sits at the 96th percentile nationally and the 91st percentile among students who actually take the SAT, so only about one in eleven recent test takers scored higher. It is 335 points above the class of 2026 average of 1045.

At this level the question is no longer whether your score is good. It is whether it is good enough for the specific schools on your list, because a 1380 lands right at the low edge of the range at several selective universities and comfortably inside it at many others. Below you will see where it is competitive, where it is a reach, and how to decide on the November or December SAT.

What Percentile Is a 1380 SAT Score?

Here is how a 1380 compares with nearby scores in the College Board's current percentile tables:

SAT Score National Percentile User Percentile General Rating
145099th95thExcellent
142098th94thExcellent
140097th93rdExcellent
138096th91stVery good
135094th89thVery good
133093rd88thVery good
130091st85thVery good

The national percentile compares you with all US 11th and 12th graders, including students who never sit the SAT. The user percentile compares you with students who took it and graduated in the past three school years, which is the pool admissions offices actually see. By that measure about 9% scored higher than you.

The curve is flat up here. Twenty points to 1400 adds two user-percentile points; seventy points to 1450 adds four. What a gain changes at 1380 is where you sit against particular schools and scholarship tables. If your 1380 is an even 690 in each section, Reading and Writing sits at the 91st user percentile and Math at the 90th. The full chart is in our SAT percentiles guide.

Colleges Where a 1380 Is Competitive

These ranges come from each university's own Common Data Set (section C9) and describe fall 2025 enrolled first-years who submitted SAT scores:

School SAT Middle 50% (enrolled, fall 2025) Share Who Sent the SAT Your 1380 Is
Indiana University Bloomington1200-141043.2%Well above the median (1310)
Binghamton University1320-148043%Lower half (median 1410)
Stony Brook University1350-147038%Lower half (median 1410)
Lehigh University1380-148033.03%Exactly the 25th percentile (median 1430)
William & Mary1390-152048%10 points under the 25th (median 1450)

Read the table from the top. Indiana is the only school here where a 1380 is clearly above the middle of the class. At Binghamton and Stony Brook, both SUNY campuses with a 1410 median, you are 30 points under the middle and well inside the range. At Lehigh and William & Mary you are at the very bottom edge, which is the zone where a retake or a careful test-optional decision matters most.

The University of Pittsburgh needs its own note. Pitt's 2025-26 Common Data Set reports no composite range, only sections: Reading and Writing 650-720 (median 690) and Math 630-730 (median 680), for the 40.3% of first-years who sent the SAT. A 1380 split 690 and 690 matches the Reading and Writing median and sits 10 points above the Math median. Do not add Pitt's section medians together and treat the sum as a composite median; that is not how percentiles work.

All of these schools let you apply without a score for fall 2027. Lehigh says "We have extended this policy indefinitely" and superscores across test dates, Pitt is test-optional through fall 2028, and Binghamton, Stony Brook, Indiana and William & Mary are test-optional too. Where a 1380 sits at or above the median, sending it is an easy yes. At the 25th percentile it becomes a real decision, and our guide on whether to submit your SAT scores walks through it.

Reach Schools With a 1380

Above this tier, a 1380 falls below the 25th percentile of students who sent scores:

  • Villanova University. 1420-1490 (median 1450) for fall 2025, but only 19% of the class sent the SAT. Villanova says it will remain test-optional through the 2026-27 admission campaign, the class of 2031.
  • Boston University. 1420-1510 (median 1470), 36% submitting. BU is test-optional through fall 2028.
  • Emory University. 1480-1540 (median 1510), 47% submitting. Emory is test-optional for the 2026-2027 application cycle.
  • The most selective private universities, where ranges start higher still.

Notice that Villanova and BU start at 1420. That is 40 points from your score, one of the reasons 1420 shows up again in the scholarship section.

Does a 1380 Qualify for Scholarships?

Yes. A 1380 reaches the upper tiers of many automatic merit tables, and at some schools it sits one band below the top.

Ole Miss, for out-of-state students. The University of Mississippi's non-resident Academic Merit table, posted for 2026-2027 freshmen, puts a 1380 in its 1360-1410 band. The top band starts at 1420:

High School GPA SAT 1360-1410 (your 1380) SAT 1420+
3.0-3.49$10,000 a year$15,000 a year
3.5-3.74$15,000 a year$20,790 a year
3.75-4.0$18,000 a year$20,790 a year

Ole Miss says the yearly totals are renewable for up to four years when the terms are met, and it accepts SAT superscores. That makes this one of the friendliest retake targets there is: a 40-point gain can come from one section on a second test date. The table is set year by year, so check it again when the 2027-2028 version is posted.

The University of Alabama. For Alabama residents, a 1380 already reaches the Presidential tier: Alabama's 2027 in-state scholarships award the Presidential Scholarship, valued at tuition, for a 1360-1600 SAT with a 3.50 GPA or higher; only Presidential Elite (a 1600 and a 4.0) sits above it. Out-of-state students with a 1380 and a 3.50 fall in the UA Scholar band (1360-1410, $24,000 a year), and the Presidential band starts at 1420. Unlike Ole Miss, Alabama does not use superscores for scholarships, so the score has to come from one test date, and official scores are due by UA's December 4 priority deadline, which November 7 scores, released November 20, can meet if UA is one of your free score sends, and December 5 scores cannot. Our 1400 SAT guide covers more scholarships near the next round number.

Should You Retake the SAT With a 1380?

A 1380 is strong enough that a retake should answer a specific question:

  • Applying out of state to Ole Miss: retake. 1420 is a $2,790 to $5,790 a year step at the listed amounts, depending on your GPA, and a superscore counts.
  • Lehigh or William & Mary is your first choice: retake if you plan to send scores. At or just under the 25th percentile, 50 points would put you at Lehigh's median, and Lehigh superscores.
  • Villanova or BU is on your list: a 40-point gain only reaches the 25th percentile there. A retake helps, but applying test-optional with a strong record is a reasonable alternative.
  • Your list looks like Indiana, Binghamton, Stony Brook or Pitt: your score already fits. Put the time into essays.
  • Alabama resident with a 3.50: you already have the in-state Presidential test score, as long as it came from one sitting. Retake only for admissions.

On timing: if you took the October 3 SAT, your scores arrive on Friday, October 16. The next test dates are November 7 (register by October 23, late registration through October 27; scores November 20) and December 5 (register by November 20, late registration through November 24; scores December 18), per the College Board's test calendar. If you are applying early, check each school's last accepted test date against its deadline; our list of early action deadlines is the place to start.

The free score sends come first. Each registration includes four free score reports if you order them by 9 days after the test date; after that each report costs $15, per the College Board's fee page. For November 7 that means choosing by November 16 and for December 5 by December 14, both before you see the new score. Sending blind is usually safe for schools that superscore, such as Lehigh, because a lower second score does not replace the first; our guide to SAT superscoring explains why.

How to Go From 1380 to 1450

Seventy points is about 35 per section. At 1380 you already get the large majority of questions right, so this is a precision job, not a content review.

  1. Find your errors by type, not topic. Sort every miss from your last two practice tests into "did not know," "misread," and "rushed." At 1380 the second and third piles are often bigger than the first, and they are the cheapest to fix.
  2. Treat the harder second module as the real test. A strong first module routes you to the harder second one, which is where 1450 is decided. Practice full second modules under real timing so the harder questions do not throw off your pace.
  3. Close specific Math gaps. Circle equations, exponential models, systems with a quadratic and right-triangle trigonometry are all on the test. If any of them still feels shaky at 1380, it is learnable in a few focused sessions.
  4. In Reading and Writing, prove every answer. For evidence and inference questions, point to the line in the text before you choose. For Standard English conventions, name the rule. If you cannot, you are guessing.
  5. Take two full Bluebook practice tests before your test date and review every miss, including the ones you guessed right.

Frequently Asked Questions About a 1380 SAT Score

Is 1380 a good SAT score?

Yes, it is a very good score. A 1380 is at the 96th percentile nationally and the 91st among SAT takers, 335 points above the class of 2026 average of 1045. It fits comfortably at many selective public universities and sits at the low edge of the range at several selective private ones.

What ACT score is a 1380 SAT equal to?

The official ACT/SAT concordance matches a 1380 SAT to a 30 on the ACT. One more step up, a 1390 concords to a 31.

Is a 1380 good enough for Lehigh?

It is right at the edge. A 1380 is exactly the 25th percentile of Lehigh's fall 2025 enrolled students who sent the SAT (middle 50%: 1380-1480). Lehigh is test-optional and superscores, so you can either retake toward its 1430 median or apply without the score.

Should I send a 1380 to a test-optional school?

Send it where it is at or above the median, such as Indiana, and generally where it sits inside the range, such as Binghamton or Stony Brook. Where it is at or below the 25th percentile, such as Villanova or BU, think twice and let the rest of your application lead.

Is it worth retaking a 1380 for 1400?

Twenty points adds only two user-percentile points, so 1400 by itself is mostly a round number. A retake pays when it aims at a real line, like the 1420 band in Ole Miss's out-of-state table or a top-choice school whose median is 1430 or higher.
