Most early action deadlines for the 2026-27 cycle fall on November 1, 2026, which is a Sunday this year. A handful come two weeks earlier, on October 15 (UNC-Chapel Hill, Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech for Georgia students), and a few run later: UChicago on November 2, Virginia Tech on November 15. Early action decisions arrive anywhere from mid-November to late February, depending on the college.
The table below lists the early action deadline for 30 popular colleges, plus Early Decision I where the same college offers it, each read from the college's own admissions page on October 8, 2026. After it: the deadlines that are not November 1, the paperwork dates behind them, decision dates, and which SAT and ACT dates still count.
Early Action Deadlines for 2026-27
Colleges publish these in different ways. Some print the year and some print only a month and day, so we've kept each college's own wording. "Testing" is the college's policy for fall 2027 applicants. The last column shows a test date or score deadline only where the college publishes one for its early round.

EA is early action, REA restrictive early action, SCEA single-choice early action and ED early decision. Dates can change after we read them: treat the table as a map and your applicant portal as the final word.
Early Action vs Restrictive Early Action vs Early Decision
- Early action (EA) is non-binding: apply to as many EA colleges as you like and decide in the spring. As Wisconsin puts it, "Early Action is non-binding."
- Restrictive or single-choice early action (REA, SCEA) is also non-binding but limits where else you apply early. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Caltech and Notre Dame use it, each with its own exceptions (Notre Dame's REA applicants can't apply binding Early Decision I elsewhere). See restrictive early action.
- Early decision (ED) is binding. If you're admitted, you enroll and withdraw your other applications. See is early decision binding for what the agreement says, and early action vs early decision for the full comparison.
Michigan, UVA, USC, Villanova, Fordham, Northeastern and Case Western run EA and ED side by side on November 1, and UChicago runs both on November 2. At those colleges the choice is about how sure you are, not about timing.
The Early Action Deadlines That Are Not November 1
November 1 is the default, but it is not universal. These are the dates that catch students out:
- October 15. UNC-Chapel Hill, the University of Georgia and Clemson all close early action on October 15. Georgia Tech's EA1 round, for students from Georgia, is October 15 too. If one of these is on your list, your deadline is three days after this article goes up.
- Florida's Early Decision. UF's binding Early Decision is due October 15, 2026, with a decision by December 11, 2026. Its non-binding Early Action is November 1.
- November 2. UChicago's Early Action and Early Decision I, and Georgia Tech's EA2 for students from outside Georgia.
- November 15 and December 1. Virginia Tech's early action is November 15, and it has no Early Decision round. Minnesota runs a second early action round, EA II, due December 1.
- No early action at all. Boston College offers Early Decision I (November 1) and II but no early action round. Texas A&M has a single December 1 deadline for College Station and says applying early "does not guarantee an early decision."
What the Early Action Deadline Covers
The date in the table is for your application. Several colleges give the rest of the file (transcripts, recommendations, scores) a few more days, and those second dates are firm too. Caltech wants all materials by November 6, Illinois and UNC by November 7 (at UNC that includes test scores), Florida's early action materials (including scores) and UVA's teacher and counselor forms by November 8, Wisconsin by November 9, Notre Dame's REA documents by November 15 and Fordham's whole file by November 20. Georgia's materials are due October 29, and Georgia Tech's documents October 30 (EA1) or November 16 (EA2).
When Early Action Decisions Come Out
Private colleges with a November 1 deadline mostly answer in mid-December: MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Caltech, Notre Dame and UChicago all say mid-December, and Georgetown says by December 15. Fordham lists December 20, 2026. Big public universities usually take longer. Penn State says by December 24, Purdue January 15, Illinois January 29, Wisconsin on or before January 31, Maryland by February 1, and Virginia Tech late February.
Some universities answer in-state students first: Ohio State releases Ohio residents on December 11 and others on January 22, and UNC answers North Carolina residents by December 20 and others by February 15. Where a college runs ED and EA together, ED comes first: Michigan answers ED by December 24 and EA by January 29. For the binding round, see when early decision results come out.
The Last SAT and ACT for Early Action
On the calendar, the tests left before a November 1 deadline are the October 3 SAT (already taken, scores out October 16) and the October 17 ACT (scores online from October 22, on paper October 27). Late registration for the October ACT closed on September 29, so if you aren't registered, your next ACT is December 12.
| Test |
Register by |
Scores released |
For early action |
| SAT October 3 | Closed | October 16 | Fits every early round in the table |
| ACT October 17 | Closed (late deadline was September 29) | October 22 online, October 27 paper | Fits most November 1 rounds. Too late for Stanford's ACT cutoff |
| SAT November 7 | October 23 (late October 27) | November 20 | Only where the college says so: MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Yale, UChicago |
Those dates come from College Board and ACT. The October group: Princeton says to test "by the October test date" for single-choice early action, Stanford wants the SAT by the end of October and the ACT by the end of September, Georgetown says September and October scores typically arrive in time, and Ohio State names the October 3 SAT and October 17 ACT, and USC says October is the final sitting it considers for Early Action and Early Decision. The November group: MIT and Caltech accept tests taken before November 30, Harvard says you "may submit the November series", Yale says October or November exams are generally available, and UChicago accepts November SAT scores for Early Action and Early Decision I.
Many other colleges publish a score deadline instead of a test date: Michigan wants self-reported scores by November 1, UNC by November 7, Florida by November 8 for early action, Wisconsin official scores by November 9, Georgia Tech by November 16 for EA1, and Fordham by November 20. A November 7 SAT, with scores on November 20, is too late for the first five and leaves no margin at Fordham. Georgia Tech's EA2 self-report date, December 8, is the exception. For the binding round, our last SAT and ACT for early decision guide has the same calendar.
Test-Optional Colleges Still Have a Testing Decision
Ten colleges in the table require a score for fall 2027: MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Florida and Ohio State. Purdue says it expects one. Most of the rest are test-optional, and Princeton and Notre Dame have announced that testing returns for students entering in fall 2028. Test-optional still means a decision with a date: UVA lets early applicants change their testing choice until 5 p.m. on November 22, Northeastern wants it by November 15 for Early Decision I and December 1 for Early Action, and Villanova allows a change until November 10 for its early rounds. Our guide to whether to submit SAT scores covers how to decide.

- By October 27. October 17 ACT scores come out: online from October 22, on paper on October 27.
- Late October. Submit early. November 1 is a Sunday, and your counselor is easier to reach on Friday, October 30.
- November. Check each portal for missing materials, then keep your regular applications moving. Our regular decision deadline table has the January dates, and Early Decision 2 is the second binding round if you want one.
Frequently Asked Questions About Early Action Deadlines
When is the early action deadline for most colleges?
November 1, 2026. Of the 30 colleges in our table, 24 have an early action round due that day, and four more (UNC, Georgia, Clemson and Georgia Tech's EA1) close October 15. The 24 include MIT, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Michigan, UVA and USC.
Is early action binding?
No. Early action is non-binding, so you can be admitted and still decide in the spring. Restrictive and single-choice early action are non-binding too, but they limit where else you can apply early. Only early decision is a binding commitment.
Can I apply early action to more than one college?
Yes, to as many colleges with unrestricted early action as you like. If you apply REA or SCEA to a college like Harvard, Yale or Stanford, follow that college's rules on other early applications.
Can I take the November SAT for early action?
Only at colleges that say so. The November 7 SAT releases scores on November 20, after a November 1 deadline. MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Yale and UChicago say they accept November scores for their early rounds. Register by October 23.
When do early action decisions come out?
Most selective private colleges answer in mid-December. Large public universities often take until late January or February: Illinois says January 29, Wisconsin January 31, Maryland February 1 and Virginia Tech late February.
