Bright Futures SAT scores at a glance
Florida's Bright Futures scholarship program has three main award levels, each with its own SAT, ACT, GPA, and community service requirements. If you are Florida-bound and planning to use Bright Futures, the short version is this: a 1330 SAT and a 3.5 weighted GPA gets you Florida Academic Scholars (the top tier with full tuition), and a 1190 SAT with a 3.0 weighted GPA gets you Florida Medallion Scholars (75% of tuition). If you are on a career and technical pathway, there is a lower cutoff through Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars.

The three Bright Futures award levels (2026 requirements)
Here are the minimum qualifying requirements for the Class of 2026. These are Florida's published cutoffs and can shift slightly year to year, so confirm with the official Florida Bright Futures website before you rely on them for planning.
CLT score alternatives exist (95 for FAS, 82 for FMS), and the community service requirement can be satisfied with 100 paid work hours if you prefer working to volunteering. Florida residency is required, and you need to graduate from an eligible Florida high school or homeschool program.
Florida Academic Scholars (FAS): the top tier
This is the full-ride Bright Futures tier. To qualify you need:
- SAT: 1330 composite (or ACT 29, or CLT 95)
- Weighted GPA: 3.5 in the 16 core academic credits required for state university admission
- 75 hours of community service (or 100 hours of paid work, or 100 combined volunteer and paid hours)
- Florida residency and graduation from an eligible Florida high school
- Submit the Florida Financial Aid Application before August 31 of your graduation year
FAS covers 100% of tuition and the associated fees College Board considers "applicable," which includes activity, health, athletic, capital improvement, technology, and transportation fees. Specific per-credit-hour values are published by each Florida public university; the University of Florida, for example, currently awards about $212 per credit hour at the FAS level. Combined with a 12-15 credit course load, that is typically over $3,000 per semester before you consider the reduced financial strain on your family.
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS): the broader tier
FMS is reachable for a much larger share of Florida graduates:
- SAT: 1190 composite (or ACT 24, or CLT 82)
- Weighted GPA: 3.0 in core academic credits
- 75 hours of community service (or 100 hours of paid work)
- Same Florida residency and application requirements as FAS
FMS covers 75% of tuition and applicable fees. Using the same UF example, the per-credit-hour amount sits around $159. Across a standard academic year, that is typically $2,000 to $2,500 per semester in covered costs.
An SAT between 1190 and 1329 pairs a Medallion SAT score with a potential Academic GPA, so a high-GPA student can still land at FMS if the SAT is the limiting factor. That is worth knowing before you retake.
Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSVS)
This tier exists for career and technical education (CTE) pathways. The requirements are structured differently because the program is built around a trade credential, not a traditional college track:
- SAT: 490 EBRW and 480 Math (section minimums rather than composite)
- ACT: 17 English, 19 Reading, 19 Math
- PERT (Florida's placement test): 106 Reading, 103 Writing, 114 Math — this alternative is useful for students who do not plan to take the SAT or ACT
- 3.0 weighted GPA in non-elective core academic courses, plus a 3.5 unweighted GPA in 3 full credits of a single CTE program
- 5+ postsecondary credit hours earned through CAPE Industry Certifications that articulate to college credit
- The same 75 hours of service (or paid-work alternative)
GSVS awards cover a portion of tuition at Florida College System institutions. The exact percentage depends on your program of study.
What it pays in dollars
Bright Futures awards are calculated per credit hour at each Florida public institution, and the rate changes annually. Here is a rough breakdown using values published by Florida universities:
These numbers vary year to year and by institution (private colleges receive a different rate than public ones). Check the financial aid office at your target college for the exact number. Florida's state budget also sometimes adjusts the per-credit rate mid-year.
How to hit the SAT cutoff
Missing Bright Futures by 30 or 40 SAT points is the single most common scholarship regret among Florida high school students. Here is how to avoid that:
- Take the SAT early enough to retake if needed. Junior spring is ideal. That gives you senior fall to retake if you miss the cutoff.
- Know which cutoff you are chasing. A 1200 SAT is not a Medallion unless you hit 1190; a 1320 is not an Academic unless you hit 1330. Every point matters.
- Drill your weakest section first. A 620 Math + 580 Reading is identical in total to a 700 Math + 500 Reading, but the second is harder to improve. Balance matters.
- Use free official resources. Bluebook practice tests, Khan Academy Official SAT Prep, and Larry Learns quizzes are enough to move most students 50-100 points with focused prep.
- Consider the ACT as a backup. If your SAT sits at 1280 after two attempts, an ACT 29 is a different path to the same FAS status.
Application timeline
Bright Futures is not automatic. You have to apply, even if you hit every academic requirement. The timeline that matters:
Staying eligible after year 1
Bright Futures renewal is its own game:
- FAS recipients must maintain a 3.0 cumulative college GPA
- FMS recipients must maintain a 2.75 cumulative college GPA
- Both must complete a minimum number of credit hours per year (typically 24 if full-time)
- Grades and credits are evaluated at the end of spring term each year
If you fall below the GPA in a given year, you can regain eligibility by raising it again by the end of the next qualifying term.

Florida Medallion Scholars covers 75%, roughly $150-$160 per credit hour. Private college attendees receive a fixed lower rate.
Can I use Bright Futures at an out-of-state school?
No. Bright Futures only applies at eligible Florida public and private postsecondary institutions. If you attend college outside Florida, you forfeit the scholarship. Some students defer enrollment briefly or take a gap year, but that does not unlock out-of-state use.
When is the Bright Futures application deadline?
The Florida Financial Aid Application opens October 1 of your senior year and must be submitted by August 31 after high school graduation. Missing the August 31 deadline permanently disqualifies you for that award year even if you meet every academic requirement.
Does the PSAT count for Bright Futures?
