Does Duke Require SAT? No, Test-Optional for Fall 2027

No. Duke is test-optional for both first-year and transfer applicants in the 2026-27 admissions cycle (students entering fall 2027). In Duke's own words, students who apply without SAT or ACT scores this year "will not be at a disadvantage" in how their applications are considered. That covers Early Decision and Regular Decision, international students, and students who want to be considered for Duke's merit scholarships.

This page is about the policy. For how a particular score compares, see SAT and ACT scores for Duke. Policy sources: Duke's application requirements and Duke's Resources + FAQs (both checked September 24, 2026).

Duke's Test-Optional Policy for 2026-27

Duke's application page says its decisions are based on a student's comprehensive application materials, with or without test scores. If you choose to submit, Duke will consider your SAT or ACT as part of the file and will accept self-reported scores. Official scores from the testing agencies are required only if you enroll.

A few details that are easy to miss:

  • Merit scholarships are open without scores. Duke says students who do not submit test scores are still eligible for its merit scholarships.
  • ROTC scholarships can be an exception. Duke says some exceptions may apply here: to be considered for a national Air Force, Army, or Navy ROTC scholarship, you must submit SAT or ACT scores to those scholarship programs.
  • Only high school tests count. Duke will not consider an SAT or ACT taken before high school.
  • There is no announcement yet about 2027-28. Duke's pages describe this cycle only. Current juniors should not assume the policy carries over and should check Duke's page again next summer.

That last point matters because several peer schools are moving the other way. Penn already requires the SAT or ACT, and Columbia will require it starting next cycle. Duke has not said anything similar.

How the Opt-In Question Works

On Duke's application you indicate whether you want your SAT or ACT scores considered. The rules around that answer, from Duke's FAQ:

  • "Yes" cannot become "no." Once you submit with "yes, consider my scores," you cannot switch. If you say yes but never report a score, Duke simply reviews your application without one.
  • "No" hides your scores. If you already sent scores to Duke and choose "no," those scores are suppressed during selection.
  • "No" can become "yes." You can change your preference in your application portal until November 21 for Early Decision or February 13 for Regular Decision. Deferred Early Decision applicants who opted out can also opt in by February 13 for the Regular Decision review.
  • AP and IB scores are not suppressed. If AP or IB scores are already on file, choosing "no" for the SAT or ACT does not hide them.

Duke's own advice for students who are unsure is practical: opt out when you apply, because you can opt in later. For a general framework on that decision, see should I submit my SAT scores.

If You Submit: Highest Scores, Score Choice, and the ACT

  • SAT, ACT, or both. Duke says it will always consider your highest score regardless of test type or test date.
  • Score Choice is fine. You may use Score Choice for the SAT and choose which ACT test dates to send. Duke does not require all of your scores.
  • Duke superscores both tests. Its application page says it considers your highest score on each SAT section regardless of test date. For the ACT, it takes your highest section scores across dates and averages them into a new composite. If you send ACT scores from several dates, report your highest section scores from each date along with your official ACT superscore from your MyACT account.
  • ACT Science is optional but encouraged, especially for students interested in STEM. If you submit it, Duke treats it as additional information in its holistic review. On the enhanced ACT, the composite is English, Math, and Reading, with Science reported separately.
  • Writing and essay scores are optional on both tests.
  • Codes: SAT 5156, ACT 3088.

Duke also adds a note worth hearing: testing more times does not hurt you, but it should not become an extracurricular. Its FAQ says most students do not see significant improvement beyond a second or third attempt. If superscoring is new to you, how SAT superscoring works explains why a second attempt carries little risk.

Duke Deadlines and the Last Test Dates

For the 2026-27 cycle, Duke's checklist and deadlines page lists Early Decision on November 2 and Regular Decision on January 4. It also lists the last test date for each round:

Round Application due Last SAT Last ACT Opt in to scores by
Early Decision (binding) November 2, 2026 November 7, 2026 October 17, 2026 November 21
Regular Decision January 4, 2027 December 5, 2026 December 12, 2026 February 13

Watch the Early Decision timing closely. The November 7 SAT releases scores on November 20, and the opt-in deadline is November 21, so you get about one day to decide whether to add that score. Registration for the October 17 ACT has closed. For the November 7 SAT, regular registration closes October 23 and late registration October 27, per College Board. Early Decision decisions come out in mid-December. More on timing across schools is in the last SAT and ACT dates for Early Decision.

What a Competitive Score Looks Like at Duke

Duke publishes two useful sets of numbers, and they measure slightly different groups:

Source Group SAT middle 50% ACT middle 50%
Common Data Set 2025-26 (C9) Enrolled first-years, fall 2025, who submitted 1510-1570 (median 1550) 34-35 (median 35)
Class of 2029 profile Admitted students who chose to report 1520-1570 34-36

In the Common Data Set, 48% of enrolled first-years submitted SAT scores and 27% submitted ACT scores, so a meaningful share of the class enrolled without a score in the file. Duke's Class of 2029 profile reports 58,712 applications, a 5.2% overall acceptance rate, 12.6% in Early Decision, and 4.2% in Regular Decision.

What that means for you: because only students who liked their scores sent them, the band is high. A score at or above the bottom of the range, around a 1500 or a 34, generally fits the admitted pool. A score well below it is often one you can leave off, since Duke says you will not be at a disadvantage without it. Duke itself suggests using its admissions profile as a guide when you decide.

Current Juniors: What to Do Now

Duke has not published a testing policy for the class entering fall 2028, and several highly selective schools now require scores. The low-regret plan is to take the SAT or ACT in the spring of junior year, which is also what Duke's "What We Look For" page recommends, and then decide later whether to send it.
